It may be mandatory if you have to apply for a Schengen visa or voluntary. And then it is up to everyone to buy it or not. The visa document is often impossible to obtain if the tourist has not issued an insurance policy. Recently, travel risk insurance has become increasingly popular and, as practice shows, is often justified.

Why you need insurance for travelers abroad?

Travel insurance for travel abroad is issued before leaving the country. The insurance policy guarantees tourists reimbursement for the cost of treatment in case of an accident or illness. It will help in the transportation to the homeland or under unforeseen circumstances, such as loss of luggage, travel, and so on.

According to the testimonies of holidaymakers in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, etc.), in India and South America, and the European region, pre-arranged health insurance helps solve many problems if there is a need for medical care. It is essential to insure travelers when visiting remote areas and if the rest will be associated with extreme sports and entertainment, which can easily include climbs to the mountains, surfing, skydiving, bungee jumping (similar to “Tarzana”), sea trips on various boats and even elephant riding. However, even the risks of traveling by road can be included in the insurance policy.

Types of insurance for tourists

When buying insurance, it is important to understand that it will cover the costs only for those insurance cases specified in the document. Types of insurance for tourists vary by the risks for which they are issued. Typically, insurers offer the following options for travel insurance:

  • From the non-exit. The insurance case occurs in the case of cancellation of the trip on several unforeseen circumstances. This can be under the tour operator’s circumstances or the tourists themselves (call to court, military enlistment office, illness), depending on what is specified in the insurance contract.
  • From an accident. Reimbursement of the cost of treatment and/or transportation of victims – according to the insurance terms.
  • Baggage insurance. The case involves covering damages in the case of damage and theft of things during the journey or loss of luggage by carriers.
  • Green card. It is issued in the interests of motorists to cover the cost of damage to vehicles and insurance of auto-civil liability.
  • Sports insurance. Designed for climbers, divers, motorists, and other people whose activities are active.
  • Health insurance for travel abroad. Often – a mandatory type of insurance coverage when going abroad.

Usually, basic health insurance is issued, which may cover the cost of:

  • Treatment (inpatient or outpatient).
  • Drugs and procedures prescribed by doctors.
  • Emergency dentistry.
  • Delivery to a doctor or medical facility.
  • Repatriation (return to your country).
  • Payment of communications costs.

The list of risks that the insurer covers should be specified in a particular policy. Tour operators often include basic travel insurance for going abroad in a package service. In this case, travelers are offered services in the form of a package tour – a ready-made set designed for the “average” holidaymaker. Such an offer in its cost combines the prices of flight, accommodation, food (if available in the option of travel), and transfer. Health insurance is included.

What options can be added to the basic policy?

Since the basic list does not include many risks, if desired, their number can be increased, adding options from the full list of insurance cases and the coverage offered by the insurance company. Many insurers offer expanded insurance options:

  • Accident insurance can be reimbursed for rehabilitation even after returning home.
  • Cover the damage caused to third parties. This is provided by the insurance of civil liability and consists, for example, in the payment of accidental damage to rented property.
  • When you are active or riding a bike, payment can be obtained in case of accident or injury, but only if the safety rules (the use of helmets and other protective equipment) are observed.
  • With flight cancellations or delays of more than 4 hours.
  • If you are scheduled to participate in complex expeditions, you can provide search and rescue or evacuation by helicopter.

Almost no company will be able to obtain insurance compensation if the insured person is injured in his voluntary participation in riots or hostilities, in an attempt to commit suicide or if an accident occurs with a tourist who is intoxicated.

What to look for when buying an insurance policy?

Buy insurance ahead of time, even before you go on a trip. Anyone who has traveled knows that not all insurances are valid if you purchase them at the place of arrival. Therefore, it is necessary to read the terms of the insurance carefully. And yet it is better to decide everything at home. Keep in mind that the policy will only be valid in the country it contains, except for All World policies. But even buying this type of insurance document, you need to ask whether it will be applicable in the country where the trip is planned. For example, in Iran, a policy that works for the whole world will not work – there should be insurance specifically for this country.

Most often, for countries that require a visa, the minimum possible amount of insurance payments is specified in the registration of an insurance. If you buy a policy of your own will, you can issue it at the amount of your own discretion. Not all countries need travel insurance to travel abroad. Without it, entry will not be denied in Thailand, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey. You can also not buy a policy when going to Australia and Canada. However, in this case, the last two countries’ embassies have the right to refuse visa documents.

Refusing insurance, travelers are responsible for the life and health of their children. And in case of diseases and injuries, they will have to receive treatment only with their own full payment. Therefore, travel agencies’ agents advise to issue even the most inexpensive policies, because they will return at least the minimum amount of costs in treatment.

Keep an eye out only for proven insurance companies, cooperating with well-established assistants – intermediary companies responsible for organizing the optimal procedure of all parties (clinics, insurance companies, and tourists) in the event of insurance cases. When choosing an insurance company, pay attention to the following important factors:

  • The level of medicine in the country of travel and the cost of medical services.
  • The planned stay (the longer the trip, the more expensive and the policy, and the tour itself).
  • Insurance amount (with a smaller amount of coverage, tour insurance will be cheaper).
  • The number of risks and additional options included in the insurance package.
  • The amount of risk taken by the company. Some firms may refuse to sell the policy to elderly customers, pregnant women, and people with several chronic diseases and untreated injuries.
  • Rating the company. Of course, the guarantee of 100 percent that the insurance company is reliable and flawless, no rating will provide. And yet for the purchase of a tourist policy you need to apply to a company famous for their good reputation – they are more reliable if they’re not new and little-known.
  • Check out the travel insurance programs – whether the firm offers them. Be sure to consider the offer if the company personally, under each tourist’s requests, tries to pick up the insurance program, adding to it the necessary risks (or excluding unnecessary). This approach of the firm will save travelers money by receiving only the requested package of services.
